COMMONWEALTH GAMES COMPETITION RESULTS

June 10 2014

Our recent Commonwealth games competition was a huge success with all areas of the nursery working hard to further their knowledge on their chosen country. We were extremely privileged to have our competition judged by Kirsten who is a care department lecturer at New College Lanarkshire.

Kirsten visited every area and spoke to the staff and children all about their country she then made her decision based on the following criteria:

• Participation of children
• Involvement of parents/families
• Contribution of the local community
• Engagement of the wider community
• Recycling of materials
• Use of Outdoors

We are delighted to inform you that the results of our Commonwealth games competition are as follows:

1st place
, Swaziland (room 12)
2nd place, Australia (OOS)
3rd place Guyana (room1)

Kirsten provided the nursery with feedback on each of our three winners.

Swaziland: First place Met all of the criteria. I enjoyed very much the children’s active participation. The children were keen to show me their work. This room focused on child led activities starting with the floor book to include children choices. The staff recognised the sensitive area of the national dress of Swaziland. They involved the parents/families with research and indigenous artefacts. The children went out into the local community to collect wood for spears. They were involved in the wider community with a trip to Strathclyde Park, civic centre and bookbug. The children and staff recycled parts of their display.

Australia: This is my 2nd choice. The children’s excitement and enthusiasm was catching. From the moment I entered the room children led the experience and I felt Iike I was going to Australia! I enjoyed the whole experience even the Bush Tucker Trial!! Inspiring experiences.

Guyana: This is my 3rd choice. Great use of the outdoor space, especially incorporating the children’s work on the waterfall feature. I enjoyed looking at the colourful displays with the pictures of the children involved in the creative activities.

Kirsten also provided feedback on all the individual areas and their country.

Mozambique: I enjoyed listening to the indigenous music as I arrived in the Foyer. A bright colourful display showing native produce.

Solomon Islands: Fabulous tasting table, it inspired me to buy yam this weekend
.
Dominica: I enjoyed the fabulous food. A very attractive display of the children’s work.

Nauru: The mocktails were fabulous - I must have the recipe! Good links with the community. The children’s displays were eye-catching.

Maldives: Thank you for inviting me to your wedding. Your dancing with Clyde the Mascot was marvellous.

Cyprus: Thank you to James for your excellent introduction to Cyprus. I enjoyed hearing about the artefacts and having ‘food’ in the Cypriot Taverna.

Tuvalu: Superb parental/family involvement, resulting in a large vivid display. Brilliant experiences for the children. I hope you hear back from the Tuvalu Embassy soon.

St Kitts & Nevis: Inspiring use of resources from the local community. Many opportunities for involvement of children in play experiences.

Malta: Plenty of participation from children and their families. Staff gained new knowledge from research into Malta’s past and present.

St Lucia: An attractive athlete’s village. Plenty of research and support from parents/families with fruit and photographs. Opportunities for children to participate in a range of activities.

Mauritius: Numerous creative experiences for children’s involvement. Striking window display. Engagement from parents/families.

Northern Ireland:
I enjoyed the ‘Sporty’ netball experience with the children, Recycling the bibs and t-shirts. Contact with the community. Gigantic Giant’s Causeway was enormous!

The staff and children have been working hard over the past few weeks to learn all about their chosen country. Well done to everyone who took part.
